Getting Maintenance Done
Friday, December 17, 2010 at 5:08PM
Name of Session: Getting Maintenance Done
Where: Breakout Space 6
Who was there: Stephen Carlill, Kofi Bamfo
The Session Host: Stephen Carlill
Key Points:
- Loughborough Primary School, a council school but governors appointed a maintenance contractor and the necessary work is done. Council allocate a budget specifically for maintenance.
- Library roof gutters need regular clearing. Friends of the library prevailed on Lambeth (Council) to do the work by complaining to the Audit Commission, but Lambeth discontinued clearing a couple of years later.
- Trees are planted and then die because they are not watered. Could we get individuals to adopt and look after a tree each?
- A village in Ghana has a work morning every Tuesday where all adults are expected to join in clearing gulleys, tidying and so on. The village is very well kept.
- Could we get Lambeth to concentrate on what needs paid workers and ask the community to do the rest themselves? e.g. this room (main meeting space at Stockwell Park Community Centre). It might be necessary to pay for the lighting to be improved, but volunteers could paint the ceiling, sand and polish the floor and generally redecorate
