Social Startup Labs

Where Startups Are Born

Social Startup Labs are standalone, 1-day workshops at which local enterprise ideas are generated and acted upon. Participants collectively identify opportunities for enterprise, based on existing local unused/underused assets (skills, resources, materials).

With the support of LCL Facilitators, they explore how these unused assets can brought to bear against unmet local needs for products and services. These identified opportunities take the form of fledgling startups.

The events bring together a diverse range of local actors and stakeholders:

  • public sector
  • private sector
  • third sector
  • skills camps participants.
The diversity of stakeholders is crucial to identifying truly new opportunities, and enabling local entrepreneurs access to valuable business and community intelligence. They give local entrepreneurs who would otherwise act alone, access to the bigger picture; thereby connecting up communities. Fledgling and accelerated ventures will emerge from each workshop, some of which will produce future jobs. This is how London Creative Labs facilitates job/work market creation.

As part of our Startup Brixton Programme we ran two Social Startup Labs. The programme has now finished. The details below are for reference purposes only. Feel free to use any of this material if helpful.

The Results of the Startup Brixton! Programme are Social Startup Lab June 15th 2012 and Social Startup Lab July 23rd 2012>here.

How We Marketed the Social Startup Labs Event — This is the flyer we used

As you can see the challenge was to appeal to a large cross section of the community. We knew that it would be very difficult for people to understand what it was. We had to focus on the benefits they would get from attending.

How We Marketed the Social Startup Labs Event — The Invitation

London Creative Labs are proud to present our FREE workshops: Social Startup Labs at the Brix at St Matthews, the place to do business creatively!

If you live or work in Brixton or Coldharbour, you need to be there no matter what your background!

Social Startup Labs are intense but fun one-day workshops where you will brainstorm, learn, and network with one purpose in mind:

To create new businesses that can create work for local people and contribute to sustainable regeneration by the people for the people!

You will learn how to identify business opportunities that present themselves locally. You can form a team with others around an opportunity and learn how to approach it like an entrepreneur. Together, you will decide the next steps in taking action towards turning the opportunity into a real business startup! Sir Alan Sugar of Apprentice fame might learn a few things from our approach. You certainly will.

By taking part, you will help to create new jobs and livelihoods for local residents, whether for yourself or others, even if you don't choose to be involved in one of the startups. You will contribute to making a difference locally & meet others who are doing the same.

Join us for Social Startup Labs hosted at the Brix At St Matthews, the place to do business creatively
